Given the frequency of breast cancer, you most likely know someone who has had it. If it was detected during routine screening, it was hopefully, and more likely discovered before it had a chance to spread extensively. This is the goal of cancer screening: catch it as early as possible, so that with proper treatment, it has the best chance of cure and least impact on quality of life and mortality.

In my clinical practice, I learned that breast cancer screening can be a confusing topic. In this video, Dr. Teresa Dean and I demystify breast cancer screening guidelines for average risk women (we also discuss which factors may increase risk of breast cancer). We review guidelines by the American Cancer Society and US Preventive Services Task Force.
