One of the staples in my familyโs cuisine is pita. Pita, in Serbia, can be a savory appetizer or dessert. The most popular savory pita in my house is with feta cheese (not unlike Greek spanakopita, although the spinach is optional - Iโm still working on my kids to acquire a taste for spinach...). My grandmother would make her own dough (and although Iโd love to do this on a regular basis, there are wonderful fillo dough options with no preservatives, that save A LOT of time - see my website for my fave).
My favorite dessert pita is one with sour cherries. This makes for a perfect fall comfort food and a great Thanksgiving treat. Whatโs interesting about sour cherries is that they have phytochemicals such as quercetin, gallic acid, p-coumaric acid and ellagic acid, among many others, that help reduce inflammation, reduce muscle and joint pain after exercise, improve cardiovascular health, and have even been found to decrease cancer cell growth!
Enjoy these treats and have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! As you reflect on what you are grateful for, do not forget to show your gratitude + love to your loved ones. My gratitude goes to my amazing family + friends, and these two angels :)
